Physiologic Basis of Modern Surgical Care
نویسنده
چکیده
The fourth edition of this widely used reference text of pediatric surgery certainly lives up to the golden standards of the earlier editions. This large, two-volume work is composed of monographs from 149 pediatric surgeons, most of whom are experts in their fields. The five editors have done a superb job of compiling such a massive amount of information and have, for the most part, refined the material into an attractive and informative reference work. Thirty-three new sections have been added since the last edition, including a streamlining of earlier lengthy sections on cardiac surgery, orthopedics, and neurosurgery. As a result, some excellent additions have been made in transplantation, prenatal diagnostic techniques, and prenatal support. All in all, these changes support the general focus of pediatric surgery today. Some minor criticisms are bound to occur with a work of this magnitude. In many chapters, the illustrations and photographs are overused and of poor quality. As well, other sections are too lightly treated to be considered of use for a critical reader of the field. Nevertheless, these criticisms are minor and do not affect the overall strength of this text. In short, these volumes are a welcome and superb upgrading of a classic text of pediatric surgery. In spite of rapidly changing areas of pediaric surgery, this work should serve as a valued reference for many surgeons in the years to come.

Textbook of Surgery: The Biological Basis of Modern Surgical Practice
It is both a difficult and an enviable job that has been given me-to review the latest edition of a classic textbook of surgery. The thirteenth edition of "Sabiston" continues the tradition of authoritative discussion of the broad field of surgery. As in his previous editions, Sabiston has sought the most esteemed surgeons from the entire country for contributions. The book's stated purpose is ...
متن کاملThe urgency of surgical débridement in the management of open fractures.
Emergent débridement of open fractures within 6 hours of injury has long been considered to be critical to prevention of infection. The basis for this mandate is unclear, however. In clinical practice, physiologic and logistical challenges frequently limit the degree to which such emergent surgical care can effectively be rendered. Furthermore, concerns exist that quality of care might be impro...
متن کاملThe acute respiratory distress syndrome.
The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is defined by noncardiogenic pulmonary edema and respiratory failure in the seriously ill patient. The diagnosis is clinical, established by the development of new bilateral pulmonary infiltrates and severe hypoxemia without congestive heart failure (1). The risk for ARDS also depends on both host and etiologic factors. The most common causes are s...
متن کاملNursing intervention for day-case laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
A considerable amount of elective surgery can now be undertaken on a day-case or short-stay basis--23-hour or 72-hour stay. Such changes to modern surgery are transforming surgical nursing as a result of the reduced levels of physical care traditionally required by elective surgical patients. Brief hospital stay and self-care have become the greater part of preparation for, and recovery from, e...

F reud's ideas permeate our society today. They form the basis for psychoanalysis and have been used to analyze art, history, myths, literature, and many forms of human behavior . Yet at the time Freud formulated his theories, there was little or no physiologic basis for them. However, in the past few years, advances in neurophysiology suggest that at least the following two elements of Freudia...

The present study aimed to investigate the association between the maternal use of oxytocin during labor and breastfe...
